Butoh College Performance Series---celebrating and exposing the enigmatic, ever-evolving dance-theatre koan that is Butoh. At its best, evading code and definition, butoh emerged from an east-west dialogue of identity politics and anti-capitalist embodiment practice as a rebellious, and often surreal, dance-theatre expression which has become a global expression that peers behind the mask of the civilized world.

SATURDAY, APRIL 15TH: KEN MAI (HELSINKI) REQUIEM OF FLOWER 鎮魂歌
The lifetime of a flower is fleeting. In only a brief period of days, the totality of the flower becomes as eternal as the cosmos, blossoming unabashedly into the most delicate, ephemeral and erotic expression. Shortly after, the pollen is diffused, absorbed and regenerated again for future descendants. There is no regret in its decay. Website: http://kenmaibutoh.blogspot.com/
SATURDAY, APRIL 22ND: MARI OSANAI (JAPAN) P.S-1
“(Osanai) is simply breathtaking, possessing a supple body that seems to have no spine, yet is anchored on a steel spike of consummate control. She is inspired by the natural elements, and her slow, methodical, yet radiantly beautiful explorations of physicality take her dance to a higher plane” --DANCE INTERNATIONAL Video: https://vimeo.com/7185952
SATURDAY, APRIL 29TH: YUKO KASEKI (BERLIN) SHOOT JEEZ MY GOSH photo by Sigel Eschkol photo by Sigel Eschkol
This butoh dance performance is inspired by Henry Darger’s fantasy world that juxtaposes innocence with violence. Sounds from real battles found on the Internet are contrasted with iconic corporeal movements that represent innocence. The work attempts to pose a question to the feeling of ambivalence towards the systematic violence of belief that imposes powerlessness, and simultaneously reminds us of the brutal terror that characterizes our epoch.
